another LIAR!!

So I might have actually harbored some paranoid fantasies that our whole voting system was rigged and I'm glad to be proven wrong. But this quote from Rush Limbaugh, reported by Andrew Sullivan, might fuel a whole new set of 'em.

I never thought people like Limbaugh might not believe what they were saying.

Is this why our country is in such a mess? Because people are willing to sacrifice their integrity for the sake of victory?

Democrats/liberals/progressives do it too. I know that. I know people who hate the war but are willing to vote for Hillary "Hawk" Clinton for president because she's a woman.

Fuck that, man.

We need to have a real conversation about shit in this country. Not silent acquiesence for and especially not disingenous promotion of abhorrent policies in support of our goddamn team.

It seems only natural for party hacks and apathetic types to resort to this, but when our so-called free press does it too, it just breaks my heart. More importantly, it makes it that much harder to ensure good governance.

FYI - I'm not an apathetic type

I agree with what you're saying about people being willing to lie for the sake of winning. But, since I'm one of those people who told you she'd be willing to vote for Hillary because she's a woman, I take offense at that being considered the same thing. I wouldn't vote for Elizabeth Dole (or Carole Keaton Strayhorn), for instance. It's not JUST because she's a woman, or JUST because Barack Obama is black that I would vote for a Clinton/Obama ticket, or vice versa.

Yes, Clinton supported the war in Iraq. And yes, I'm opposed to it. But she was basing that decision on the information given her by the Bush administration. Now she's a bit of a fence rider about exit strategy. She doesn't think we should just pull up stakes and leave right away, and many experts agree.

How about some things she's done right (in my book anyway): she's long been a proponent for universal health care, she opposed both Roberts and Alito, and she opposed the amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage.

On a final note, from the numbers of people we've seen over the last few elections who are willing to vote for people like Bush, it seems like we have a pretty divided country (mostly around religious issues). While it isn't my perfect fantasy come true to elect centrists like Clinton, I think that if we have a truly representative government, that is the best we'll be able to hope for until we can brainwash all the conservative voters. So, taking a realistic view, I'm less likely to scream "vote your conscience" now, after 6 years with Bush, than I was when I voted for Nader way back when.
